Five Habits to Take Care of Your Teeth

Good oral health supports your entire body’s health, and it all comes down to a few everyday habits. In a new Folio article, experts at the University of Alberta’s Mike Petryk School of Dentistry share their top tips:

  1. Start young. A child’s first dental visit should happen by their first birthday. Also, did you know that a parent’s health during pregnancy can shape those baby teeth?
  2. Watch what (and when) you eat. Frequent snacking, especially on sugary foods and drinks, feeds the bacteria that cause plaque, decay and gum disease. It’s better to consume your treat in one sitting rather than spread it over a few hours.
  3. Know your risk factors. Smoking, fluctuating blood sugar, and even sharing utensils with a young child can all raise risk.
  4. Establish lifelong good habits. Brush every surface twice a day with soft bristles, and clean between your teeth daily with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser.
  5. See the dentist before it hurts. Regular check-ups catch gum disease, decay and even oral cancers early, long before they become painful or costly.
