Alberta Dental Association’s Statement on Community Water Fluoridation

The Alberta Dental Association (ADA) strongly supports community water fluoridation as a safe, effective, and fair way to prevent tooth decay and improve oral health for Albertans. This reflects long-standing guidance from Health Canada, the Canadian Dental Association, and Alberta’s own dental public health experts.

As dentists, we see the significant impact of preventable tooth decay in the lives and health of children, adults, and seniors.

Public health measures like fluoridation help reduce avoidable pain, missed school and work, and costly dental treatment due to cavities. For many people, no affordable and readily available alternative offers the same level of protection.

Alberta’s own data show that communities with optimally fluoridated water have better oral health and lower dental treatment needs, with the greatest benefit in vulnerable groups. Calgary’s decision in 2025 to reinstate fluoridation now protects more than 1.5 million people in the community and surrounding region.

Community water fluoridation has been used safely for more than 70 years. Major health authorities in Alberta, across Canada, and around the world have reviewed the evidence and continue to support fluoridation at recommended levels of 0.7 milligrams per litre (mg/L). When fluoride stays within the optimal range, it helps prevent cavities while keeping any risk of side effects very low.

The one side effect of excessive intake in young children is mild dental fluorosis—small white flecks on teeth that are usually not noticeable and do not affect function or health.

Community water fluoridation is one important part of a broader approach to keeping mouths and entire bodies healthy. Alberta’s dentists will continue to support practical, evidence-based measures that prevent disease, reduce suffering, and strengthen the health of our communities.

Questions about fluoride

We recognize that some Albertans have sincere questions about safety, consent, and the role of government in public health. We are happy to support non-political, evidence-based conversations grounded in Alberta’s own experience and expertise. We encourage Albertans to speak with their dentist or dental hygienist and to rely on reputable health sources when making decisions for themselves and their families.

Whether or not your community water is fluoridated, you can protect your oral health by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth daily, limiting sugary foods and drinks, and seeing your dentist regularly for prevention and early treatment.

Respecting questions and public debate
We recognise that Albertans may have sincere questions about any substance added to public drinking water, including fluoride. It is appropriate for residents, municipal leaders, and provincial decision-makers to expect clear information, transparency, and ongoing monitoring when it comes to public health measures.

At the same time, misinformation can make it difficult for people to know what to trust. The Alberta Dental Association encourages Albertans to seek information from credible health sources and to speak directly with their dentist, dental hygienist, or physician if they have concerns about fluoride.

Where community water fluoridation is in place, we support continued monitoring and public reporting of water quality, and clear communication so residents understand both the benefits and the safeguards that are in place.
