Calgarians’ smiles got a little brighter today as the city has officially reintroduced fluoride into its drinking water. A move fully supported by the Alberta Dental Association.
“Calgarians should be proud of this decision, adding fluoride to tap water is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent cavities,” says Dr. Hans Herchen, President of the Alberta Dental Association. “Fluoride is a safe, affordable way to protect oral health, reintroducing it now is a step in the right direction towards healthier smiles and healthier people across the city of Calgary.”
Fluoride has been used safely in Canadian drinking water for decades. Its usage is supported by more than 90 major health organizations worldwide, including Health Canada, the Canadian Dental Association, and public health experts across the country. The levels used are carefully monitored to ensure they’re both safe and effective.
“Water fluoridation protects every member of the community, especially those with limited access to regular dental care,” says Dr. Herchen. “This is something that has been studied for more than 75 years and has been found to not only be safe but one of the most fair and cost-effective methods to prevent cavities.”
A Canadian study estimates that every dollar invested in community water fluoridation saves more than $70 in future dental treatment costs.
“When Calgary stopped fluoridating in 2011, local research showed a rise in tooth decay, particularly in children,” says Dr. Herchen. “Reinstating fluoride helps reverse that trend and strengthens the foundation for better oral health across the city.”
